Not sure.

As I pack for my trip to Sturgis next week i'm often asked will you go to Sturgis 2012 as well? Heck i'm not sure, it's 12 months away and life can throw you lots of curveballs. I've taken many other bike trips on my Streetglide that have nothing to do with Sturgis so i'm inclined to say no. Not that I won't have fun this year, it will be a blast! But usually I head to Sturgis every other year or sometimes skip multiple years and head to other states to keep my riding fresh. Sure Sturgis 2012 will have more and better bands as each year everything tops the previous year but there are many trips and many opportunities to take a great ride on my 2006 Streetglide. I imagine that after this years trip to Sturgis i'll have a better opinion and depending on what concerts are lined up will really help me make up my mind.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://streetglide.blogspot.com/2011/07/taking-my-streetglid-to-sturgis-2012.html' title='Taking My Streetglide To Sturgis 2012? I've taken it to Michigan and Chicago as well but on the trip to Sturgis I found my Streetglide to be the best bike i've ever taken to the rally. The fairing provided excellent wind protection which is critical if you are headed west on I-90 trying to make time. It was also helpful in the rain allowing me to duck behind it and maintain a good pace so I could make time and hit the Sturgis Campgrounds by dinner. This year i'll be taking the Streetglide to Sturgis 2011 but i'm not sure exactly where i'll be staying. I know once again i'll be glad to have the good looks, great riding and of course the radio to keep me comfortable on the ride out to Sturgis.

Paid Off My Streetglide

Whoo hoo, I made my final payment on my Streetglide this week. When I sold my Softail I was going to put the money towards my 2006 Streetglide but since the interest rate was just 5.5 percent on the loan I decided to use the money to add to the down payment on my Minnesota House For Rent. This might not have been such a great idea as I hate making payments and it really makes owning my Streetglide less interesting. Now that my Harley is paid off it will be alot more fun owning and riding it without making a $380 a month payment each month. Now I just have to pay off my truck and mortgage on my primary and rental house to be payment free. A long goal I know but clearing the debt on the Streetglide really moves me closer to that goal.

Excellent Edina Mall Southdale

A friend and I were in Edina killing time when we decided to get something to eat. We headed over to Southdale Mall which is a nice upscale mall in Edina Minnesota. I had never been to Southdale so I was amazed at the variety of shops and the upscale nature of the mall really fit with Edina's cakeeater image. One of my favorite aspects of Southdale mall is the restaurants. Big names like Cheesecake Factory and California Pizza Kitchen make sure that a day of shopping at Southdale Mall can end with a great meal, excellent drinks and desert. Depending on where you live in Minnesota Southdale Mall can be a hall but it is certainly a great alternative to other malls like the Mall of America in Bloomington.

48 MPG From My Streetglide

With gas getting so expensive I decided to discover what the MPG is for a Streetglide. I'm pleased to report that driving conservatively and coasting at times I was able to get 48 MPG on an 83 mile trip. I'll be doing more testing and documenting the data at my motorcycle MPG blog. I had a discussion with the service manager about my plans and he recommended the Hooker Tuned Flow slip-ons. I didn't do my homework but lucked out because I like these and my dyno numbers are nice. What I wondered about was did tuned flow mean you could tune the pipes or that they were pre-tuned from Hooker. When I had my SE-204 cam installed and the Streetglide dyno tuned I noticed the tone of the exhaust had gotten louder and deeper sounding very nice. I even had a guy stop me at a gas station and ask about the pipes because he felt they had the "Harley Sound". So i'm surfing and I come across this.

https://www.directparts.com/cgi-bin/dp.store/EN/Product/07-970

Turns out it is a tunable system so maybe the dealer tuned the slip-on exhaust when they did the dyno-tune. Anyway i'm pleased so if your considering slip-on exhaust for the Streetglide these are making me happy.

Glad I bought Pre-Paid Maintenance

Remember that dirty Streetglide from Sturgis? I HATE washing my bike so I try to time my service at Zylstra Harley Davidson in Elk River. They wash my bike after each service which saves me the time. When I bought my Streetglide I bought pre-paid maintenance for the first 20,000 miles. I figured i'd not want to work on a dresser with all the covers over stuff. So during my Sturgis trip My Streetglide passed 2500 miles and while Harley Davidson no longer requires you service your motorcycle at 2500 miles it was part of the pre-paid maintenence. I took the Streetglide to Zylstra and sure enough at 3700 miles I get an oil change and best yet my dirty bike washed and looking new.

Riding Near Sturgis / Custer

Monday we took a great drive beginning in Sturgis, then visited Deadwood and took 385 South through Custer, Needles Highway and back up 79 to Rapid City. The drive took all day but only amounted up to about 140 miles. Due to the traffic and windy roads i'd guess our average speed was about 40 mph. The Streetglide performed flawlessly, no issues at all. For those of you who think your Streetglide is unique? Hit Sturgis and you'll find the Harley Davidson Streetglide is the bike of the day. They are everywhere. Lucky I bought mine for function and could care less if it's one of a billion on the road. It has everything I want in a bike. For more stuff from Sturgis 2006 i'll be posting my pics at my Sturgis Pictures and Sportster websites. Hope to have them up by next week. In the meantime here's a picture of my Streetglide after some dickhead on a chopper passed me on the muddy road at Glenco Campground.

Streetglide headed to Sturgis 2006

Here's my Streetglide all packed up for Sturgis 2006. I'll be heading out at 4:30am on 8/6 and should arrive at Glenco Campground at around 5:00pm. While the Streetglide had less room on the luggage rack than my FXSTS with the render rack, the extra room in the bags let me pack less stuff. I managed to fit two tents and a stuff sack full of clothes etc. Just using bungies this year as I didn't feel like removing the seat to run nylon straps. Nothing moved during the shakedown run so hopefully the bungees will cut it.

Billy Lane Video

I found the coolest video, it's from the new season of Biker Build Off. On the 2006 FL models including the FLHX Streetglide the ignition switch is on the fork in what's called the "international style". This is not an easy switch to use when locking the fork and switch but with some practice it's no problem. I actually had to take the Streetglide to the Harley Dealer and ask how to lock the forks and lock. Here's the process. Turn the fork all the way to left. Turn the ignition switch counter clockwise as far as it goes. Verify the fork is locked and then insert your ignition key to lock the ignition. The recall is due to the lock being hard to use vs a style on the dash I suppose. Not sure i'm not doing the recall as I like it how it is. Attached is the Streetglide recall notice.

Streetglide at Excelsior Henderson

A buddy and myself went to Mankato to watch the hillclimb races that the Kato Cycle Club was hosting. The cam and install was $800.00 (Steep) but the results were impressive. When I bought the FLHX I had a Mikuni HSR-42 carb installed with the Screaming Eagle air cleaner and hooker tuned flow slip on mufflers. I liked the setup but the mufflers seemed too quiet and the performance doing a roll on at 3000rpm was leaving me wanting a bit more. I didn't want to go with the Screaming Eagle heads or 95 inch kit due to the cost and the fact that I was generally satisfied with the performance of the Streetglide in its stage 1 form.

Results! First I also had the Streetglide dyno tuned which was another $300.00 but added some HP. How much? I'll let you know next week when I get the print outs. The printer at the Harley Dealer was on the fritz and would only show the lines not the numbers.

First of all and most impressive was the sound. The new cam really woke up my pipes and I had a great rumble, much louder than before which was a mellow thump thump. The performance was as expected much improved in roll on performance, the bike seems much snappier now. I expect to enjoy this new cam much on the ride in to work.

1000 mile service and new se-204 Cam for the Streetglide FLHX

I've hit the 1000 mile mark and brought the Streetglide into Zylstra Harley Davidson in Elk River. While there i'm going to have them install a SE-204 Cam and perform the Dyno Tuning. I'll post the Dyno results when I get the Streetglide back this week. My Softail has the SE-203 cam and I like it but it's not quite a highway bike like the Streetglide is.

Hate the antenna on the Streetglide

My wife and I kept running into the antenna on my Streetglide so I removed it. Compared to other bikes and my 95" FXSTS the acceleration is not nearly the same. Still I don't mind as the Streetglide and any other Twin Cam come come from the factory with good enough power and most HD buyers are used to adding pipes and filer etc. The Streetglide unlike my Softail is geared high so I can roll at 80-85mph at 3500 RPM which makes for some very efficient travelling. I can hear the stereo and the Streetglide isn't pushed around much so you can roll at a fairly high speed fairly comfortably. Those heading to Sturgis will appreaciate this as the winds can be quite high.

The most worthless instrument

The 2006 Harley Davidson Streetglide has the following instruments on the fairing. Speedometer, Tachometer, Oil Pressure, Fuel Gague, Voltage and the most worthless instrument with potential the air temp gague. This would be very cool if it was accurate. This morning the temp was 48 degrees and i'm driving 70 mph, guess what temp my Streetglide thought it was, 68 degrees. On the way home the temp was 68 and I was driving 75mph yet the Streetglide thought it was 80 degrees. I'm guessing the sensor must be behind one of the cylinders or something so with a gague so worthless why bother. I'd prefer to have a gague for oil temp vs air temp. Oh well, its a great bike none the less.

Life Without The Antenna

The wife hated almost running into the antenna on my Streetglide and since I don't listen to the radio I removed it. She loves my Springer Softail and doesn't want me to sell it to pay for my "Grandpa Bike". However today was the first time I got to have her or any passenger on the FLHX and here's what we learned. First, we had a great time listening to some Kid Rock on the Harmon Kardon stereo. She did call the stereo a piece of shit after the CD skipped a few times. I told her i'd be having the Harley Davidson dealer look into that once I had it in for the 1000 mile service. (550 miles to go.)

Oddly the passenger pegs when folded down hit the back of my calves when walking the bike around parking lots etc. Not a huge deal, just an unexpected nuiscense. She also mentioned that the hard bags hit her legs when riding also unexpected. Once thing is that she did like the Harley Davidson Reach Seat, nice and plush.

Would the downside of things cause me to not buy a Streetglide? Hell no, I still love the bike and enjoy riding it to work each day.

Opps Can't Pay

Visited a friend who has a new Kawaski Vulcan. Nice bike especially for the price. Anyway, we rode through some previously backwoods towns now budding with new home development. I'm enjoying the Street Glide especially since hooking my ipod to the AUX connector on the FLHX stereo. We stop at a small bar and get a great burger and beer. Turns out they don't take credit cards and my buddy and I have no check or cash. They say no problem, we'll "hold" the tab. We ride down the road a few miles and find a bank with an ATM. We're back in no time with the tab plus a nice tip. I enjoy places like that. Nice to have the Street Glide to take me there.

Hooker Tuned Flow Slip On Mufflers

When I bought my Streetglide I wanted different pipes but didn't know what to pick. This wasn't going to need to be overly loud and since its a bagger the look of the pipe isn't so much an issues as it would be on my Springer Softail. I went with the Hooker Tuned Flow Slip On Mufflers. They are about $460.00 and have a nice look on the FLHX. I believe they are good performers but since the Streetglide is not yet broken in I don't have dyno numbers. The sound is a mellow rumble, louder than stock but not nearly as loud as my Vance and Hines Big Radius pipes on my FXSTS. Overall they seem like a good choice. In hindsite I might have gotten the full system for just a few dollars more.

BTW: Happy Who Invented The Motorcycle Day.

Club for Motorcycle History Buffs

streetglide

While surfing I found this club called whoinventedmotorcycle.org who meet regularly to discuss the issue of who invented the motorcycle. This is a lowered bike so the suspension is stiffer and absorbs less than what a stock bike might offer. That's not to say the Streetglide is harsh but certainly more stiff than stock bikes.

I love my streetglide

How lucky am I? It's March 10th in Minnesota and I got to ride my Streetglide to work. This is a 80 mile round trip so it was a nice chance to take a real ride on the FLHX. I can tell i'm going to love this bike. The CD player seems to skip less the warmer the weather, it's unusable at 40 degrees but at 55 degrees I could listen to CD's on the highway. The radio works perfect and I can hear even talk radio inside my helmet with the visor down. I just noticed the footboards on the Streetglide have a floating thing for your feet to isolate from vibration, very cool. I'm also loving the back support from the Harley Davidson reach seat. I just noticed that Lakeville Harley Davidson has the Screaming Eagle heads for $699.99 I may have to add those as i'm seeing that i'll have this Streetglide for a long time.

40 Degrees!

At last another ride on the new FLHX Streetglide. This is all very interesting because i've never ridden a touring bike so i'm learning lots as I go. Today I put on about 35 miles because it hit 40 degrees in Minnesota. The streetglide certainly has a stiffer suspension than my Softail but its still acceptable. I can understand why people go back to the touring shocks however. The Harmon Kardon radio is impressive in that I can have a full face helmet on withe the visor down and still hear the music clearly. The contols on the handlebars are easy to use but i've got a problem where CD's skip so often you can't really use the CD player. The HD Dealer says its not supposed to be like that so i'll have them look at it when i've got my 1k miles on the streetglide. Oddly my favorite thing is the position of the right brake pedal. On my softail you had to lift your foot to brake. On my streetglide I just put my toe over the pedal and push and my foot is still sitting on the floorboard, very comfortable. Overall i'm liking the streetglide more and more each time I ride it.

Motorcycle Related Link Exchange

If you run a website or blog related to Motorcycles, motorcycling or brand loyal to a particular brand of motorcycle you may be interested in exchanging links or URL's with other motorcycle related websites. I've spent the last five years on a FXSTS Springer Softail, here's how it compares. I put a Hooker Exhaust and Mikuni HSR 42 Carb on my Street Glide. The Hooker pipes have a deep mellow sound not super loud but certainly better than stock and will make you happy. My FXSTS has Vance & Hines Big Radius pipes and they are much louder but not as deep sounding. The streetglide seemed to have more rumble and shaking but i've not ridden my FXSTS in several months so perhaps not. The suspension on the Streetglide seemed stiffer than my FXSTS probably due to the lowered rear but was still plenty comfortable but no springy air ride that the ultra glides might offer. I added the Harley Davidson reach seat which put my feet flat on the ground vs tiptoes as the stock streetglide seat created. The reach seat is firm but will likley break in nicely and being firm should be better for long trips. The back support on the reach seat is great, i've never had a seat that seemed to support my lumbar as well. The sound system is pretty good, only used it in the garage so far. I'll post another update after my next ride.

Street Glide Arrived Today!

I got my beautiful Harley Davidson FLHX Street Glide delivered today. It is almost 745 pounds, is eight feet long, and it has a seat height of almost 27 inches. The wheelbase alone is practically 64 inches and the Street Glide clears the ground by 4.7 inches. The carburetor and electronic sequential port fuel injection (ESPFI) full five gallon fuel tank will get you up to 46 miles per gallon down the highway or 37 – 39 miles per gallon across the city, and you'll get an oil capacity of 3.8 quarts.

The Street Glide also offers the satisfaction of power and dependability of electronic convenience. Count on the Twin Cam 88® engine and 1450 cc and 88.00 ci displacement to get you there, while the electronic speedometer, odometer, resettable tripmeter, tachometer, fuel guage, volt meter, oil pressure, and air temp guage keep up with the details for you.

But those stats are comparable to the entire 2006 Harley Davidson line. Here are a few unique features that the Street Glide alone has to offer:

• A 40 watt, Harman/ Kardon audio system with an AM/ FM radio, WB, CD and MP3 player
• A solo headlight
• Bullet turn signals on the front and on the rear
• Rear suspension; low profile
• Saddlebag latches that are color matched
• Ground effects on the rear fender with tri-line

Once you've decided to pick up a new Street Glide, you'll only have one question to answer: Would you prefer that in “vivid black”, “black cherry pearl”, “black pearl”, or “deep cobalt”?

Finally A Touring Bike For Me

I've been riding Harley Davidson's since I got my first new 1993 Sportster 883. Since then i've had shovelheads and my latest since 2000 is my Springer Softail FXSTS that I bought new in 2000. I do a tour at least once per year on my Springer and since the last two i've wanted to get something more appropiate to tour on. Basically I want footboards, radio and a small winshield. Didn't ever like the tourpak on the electraglides so I never looked at them much. When Harley came out with the screaming eagle electra glide I really liked it but no way was I going to pay $30k for a touring bike. After my last trip to Winnepeg I found my Springer Softail to be very uncomfortable. Must be my age creeping up on me. I decided that i'd consider looking for a ten year old evo electraglide or something. Well a few weeks back I was browsing at Zylstra Harley Davidson in Elk River and found the perfect bike. This year Harley Davidson came out with the "Streetglide" which is designaged FLHX. This is an electraglide, that's been lowered. Only has side locking bags and a cut down dark colored winshield. It comes with the Harmon Kardon radio and the Road King gas tank so you get everything you need and it still has an element of cool. I bought the bike and its sitting at the dealer until we get some better weather in Minnesota. I'll keep you updated on my impressions. I'm 5"6 and found the stock seat to be too wide in the crotch so I bought a Harley Davidson "Reach" seat for Road King which fits the special dash. The narrow front allow short people to stand flat footed so that should make the bike perfect.
